Why UPI spending is easy to lose track of
A chai, an auto ride, a grocery top-up, a share of dinner sent to a friend. Each UPI payment is small, instant and spread across a few apps. None of them feels like a decision, and together they can be the largest line in your month.
The bank statement does list them, but usually as a long run of lines that carry a reference number and a handle rather than a shop name. Reading one is closer to decoding than reviewing. What helps is a ledger that stores the shop, the amount and the fact that it was UPI, so the total and the split are one tap away.
How Trove records a UPI payment
Every transaction in Trove carries a payment method: UPI, credit card, cash, bank transfer or other. It is a field of its own, separate from the category, because they answer different questions. “Food” says what you bought. “UPI” says how you paid for it.
- Say it. Tap the mic and say “Zomato 450 UPI yesterday”. Trove fills in the merchant, the amount, the method and the date for you to check before saving. Voice entry works in Chrome, Edge and Safari and keeps no audio.
- Add it by hand. The ordinary form has the same fields, with UPI one tap away in the payment method.
- Import a statement. Drop a CSV, spreadsheet or PDF from your bank into the inbox. Trove lists the rows it found and suggests a payment method from the description, and you confirm what to keep. Nothing is added until you do.
When a description mentions a known UPI handle or app, the matching rule suggests the UPI method and the “UPI spends” category, which you can change. The rules are written out in the categorisation guide, so a wrong guess is easy to correct at the source.
What you can see once it is recorded
- How much of the month went out over UPI, against card, cash and bank transfer.
- Which merchants take the most of your UPI spending.
- How UPI spending moves over one, three, six or twelve months, or any two dates you pick.
- Each payment in rupees, grouped the Indian way, with larger figures also shown as lakh or crore.
The split is often the interesting part. Someone who thinks of themselves as a “card person” may find half the month went over UPI. Someone trying to pay down a credit card can watch that line separately, without UPI noise on top.
Habits that make a UPI ledger useful
- Add as you pay, or once a week. Five minutes on a Sunday beats an hour of archaeology at month end.
- Use the statement as the safety net. Import it monthly. Trove checks new rows against what you already have, so a payment you already added is not duplicated.
- Decide what a transfer to a friend is. Money you send to repay someone is not the same as money you spend. File it under Transfer or a category of your own so it does not pose as spending.
- Keep the description honest. A few words about what a payment was for make the statement readable months later.
What Trove does not do for UPI
It cannot see a payment you did not record or import, so the ledger is only as complete as you make it. It does not track UPI app cashback or bank limits, and it does not move money. If you want a hands-off bank feed, Trove is not that today: the trade is a little entry in exchange for never handing a login to anyone.
UPI is also only one part of the picture. For the whole month, see the expense tracker for India, and for the recurring charges that quietly come out of the same accounts, the subscription tracker. The features page lists everything else, and pricing explains what it costs: nothing, while Trove is in testing.
Questions people ask
- Does Trove read my UPI app or my SMS?
- No. Trove does not connect to PhonePe, Google Pay or any other UPI app, and it does not read your messages. A UPI payment appears in Trove because you said it, typed it or imported a statement that contains it.
- Does it need my UPI PIN or bank login?
- Never. Trove has no bank connection and nothing in it asks for a PIN, an OTP or a banking password. How your data is protected.
- Can I tell which UPI app a payment came from?
- The payment method is recorded as UPI whichever app you used. The merchant and description are kept as you entered or imported them, so the app name can stay in the text if you want it there.
- How do I see my total UPI spending for a month?
- Open analytics for the month and look at the split by payment method. The same view shows how much went on credit card, cash and bank transfer.
